Gunbound Philippines

We admit it. We love Gunbound. It's one of the most fun and hilarious multiplayer online games (MOG) to come out in the country. Period. It's cute, it's competitive, and it's addictive. What more could you want?!?

Gunbound lets you play as a cute wormlike creature sitting in a tank. The objective is simple. Blow everyone up by unleashing your tank's ballistic arsenal.

A classic concept taken to its delightful extreme

For those of us old enough to remember, there have been numerous games of this type released in the past. It started with Gorilla, Gorilla and its two (you guessed it) gorillas tossing explosive bananas in simple parabolic arcs. But the mother of the genre is probably Scorched Earth with its shifting windage and extensive arsenal of weapons. The next step would be Worms and its cute worm-like avatars (from which Gunbound unmistakeably harkens).

In Gunbound, you start out in a chatroom looking for opponents. Once you've got enough (you can play against multiple opponents) you start the game. Based on your account's points, you can purchase a range of weapons and ordnance to outfit your tank with. There are standard ballistic missiles, and a number of intriguing weapons like the tunneling torpedo which cuts through the ground. Once the game is in progress, it's about assessing the wind, setting the angle of your projectile, setting its launch velocity, and letting it go. Like any MOG, there is a basic chat interface that allows you to engage your opponents / teammates in chat-like conversations. It works perfectly for the ubiquitous trash talk you'll find in such competitive games!

Pay to Play... Sorta.

Gunbound Philippines has an interesting take on the pay-to-play model. You buy prepaid cards which are worth "points". These points can be exchanged for game time or weapons for your tank. In theory, if you never lose, you could get by playing with just the points you win in the games. But unless you've got some zen thing going, you'll most likely want to unleash as much firepower as you can as fast as you can. And that means spending points. With multiple opponents, even the best player can be ganged up on resulting in a regular need to top up.

The verdict: lotsa lotsa fun! It's a very addictive game that is simple to learn and is a welcome change from the mindless litany of hacking and slashing to be found in most other online games out there.
