Starcraft: Broodwars

There are two really curious things about the Starcraft franchise. You can sum it up in these simple questions:

• Why is such an old game (released 1998) still so popular?!?
• How come they still haven't come up with an follow-up?!?

Well, there must be some secret to what has often been hailed "the best strategy game of all time". Not a bad accolade considering the game was first released in Feb of 1998, that's seven years ago.

The Basics

Well, compared to current releases like THQ's Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, or sibling Warcraft III, Starcraft is a little... shall we say... behind in terms of complexity. But again, it's the simple basics that will make or break any game. And boy, does Starcraft make it! With the Broodwar expansion and recent patches, gaps in balance have been rectified. It's a simple but addictive RTS that you can play over and over and over again. Period.

Of course, Blizzard adds considerable value by letting you play Starcraft online through Battle.Net

Like a fine wine.

While Starcraft may not compete with the next generation graphics, it does hold itself well as a proven classic. Like a fine wine, you appreciate this game the more you play RTS games! Of course, when you're feeling a little under the weather, there's nothing quite as comfortable as bundling up with an old GREAT game.
